Brief summary

Buildings

In place of the large, blighted and rundown buildings and structures, the Victoria Park (Bakkabakkandi) Masterplan includes a new viewing, hospitality and operations building. The multi purpose building will be used by the South Australian Jockey Club and South Australian Motor Sports Board.

Open space

As part of Adelaide's Park Lands, Victoria Park has been widely used and enjoyed for generations for a wide range of activities. The Victoria Park (Bakkabakkandi) Masterplan recognises the park's special values and is seeking to celebrate the area's open space character and environmental qualities for the benefit of the South Australian community.

Horse racing

Victoria Park's horse racing tradition goes back to 1847 and the racecourse is recognised as one of the oldest capital city venues in Australia. Today, the Victoria Park racecourse is a well known Adelaide landmark and hosts regular horse racing meetings organised by the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC).

Motor racing

Since 1985, the combination of the Adelaide street circuit and Victoria Park, has given Adelaide a winning edge in hosting world class motor sport events.

The South Australian Motor Sports Board (SAMSB) is charged with the responsibility of hosting and managing the annual Clipsal 500 V8 car racing event.

To improve spectator facilities and reduce the impact of motor racing on the Park Lands, the SAMSB is supporting the implementation of the Victoria Park (Bakkabakkandi) Masterplan.

Redundant buildings

One of the main objectives of the Victoria Park (Bakkabakkandi) Masterplan is to return significant areas currently used for buildings and hard surfaces or with restricted access, to accessible green open space.

The removal of redundant buildings, structures and hard surface areas is the first step in rejuvenating Victoria Park as a major recreation facility and event arena.
