Achieving a major reduction in road trauma requires a unified approach between governments, industries, communities and road users. Together we have achieved the greatest improvement in fatalities of any State or Territory since 2003.
As we head towards our 2010 targets to achieve less than 90 fatalities and less than 1000 serious injuries per year, direction, engagement and participation is critical.
The Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, the Road Safety Advisory Council, Police, the Motor Accident Commission, Local Government, the transport, health and education sectors, the Centre for Automotive Safety Research, RAA and community road safety groups all have an important roles to play.
- Minister for Road Safety - Hon Carmel Zollo MLC is leading the Government’s commitment, through South Australia’s Strategic Plan, to reduce road fatalities by 40 per cent by 2010.
- Road Safety Advisory Council (RSAC) provides advice to the Minister for Road Safety by bringing various interests together, examining issues and recommending programs and initiatives.
- Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) manages the state arterial network, regulates the safety of drivers and vehicles, undertakes safety management and coordinating activities such as data analysis, policy development and community education.
- Motor Accident Commission (MAC) is responsible for third party injury insurance, and the State Government’s road safety advertising and information program.
- SA Police is responsible for road safety enforcement.
- Local Government represents community interests and manages local road networks.
- Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) is an internationally renowned road safety research facility within the University of Adelaide. CASR conducts projects to reveal the extent and type of problems on our roads, to prioritise interventions and to evaluate the impact of interventions and other actions.
Many other agencies also play a significant role including the Departments for Health, Education and Children’s Services and the South Australian Emergency Services.
The South Australian Road Safety Action Plan 2008-2010 provides the direction and identifies key priority actions based on the Safer System Approach.
