Road Safety: Bike Ed

Bike Ed is a national bicycle education program for primary school students aged 9-13 years. The program is jointly provided by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) and Local Government in South Australia to train students how to cycle safely.

Aims

Through participation in enjoyable learning experiences relevant to their ages and abilities students will:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the roads, traffic environments and appropriate road laws
  • Develop physical and cognitive skills
  • Develop responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision-making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off the road.

Program resources

Freebott Pty Ltd delivers the Bike Ed program on behalf of DTEI. Freebott supplies resources including a teaching resource kit, equipment and trained personnel to participating schools.

Accredited instructors lead students through a program covering bicycle handling skills, road rules and traffic skills.
Instructor training course

Teachers and community members can support the sustainability of the Bike Ed program and extend their cycling knowledge, skills and experience by undertaking the Bike Ed Instructor Training Course.
