Since January 1996 a facilities levy has applied when recreational boat owners register their vessels each year.

All of the funds collected from the levy are dedicated to the Recreational Boating Facilities Fund (the Fund)  which is aimed at establishing and improving recreational boating facilities in South Australia's coastal and inland waters.

Approximately $1.6 million is collected per annum.

The purpose of the Fund is to establish, expand or improve recreational boating facilities. These might include boat ramps, temporary mooring facilities or wharves, channel improvements or aids to navigation. Any local council or established community organisation proposing such projects may apply for assistance from the Fund.

Up to 50% funding assistance, matched on a $1 for $1 basis, may be allocated to councils providing the council accepts ongoing ownership, management and maintenance of the facility.

Funding allocations are approved by the Minister for Transport, following assessment of applications and recommendations by the South Australian Boating Facility Advisory Committee (SABFAC).
