How is the community being involved?

The government undertakes a comprehensive process of community engagement to ensure councils, local communities, businesses, transportation users and other interested parties have an opportunity to share their views.

At each stage of the design development, the project team has consulted with:

• pedestrian, cyclist, public transport and disability advocacy groups
• road user groups such as the RAA, South Australian Freight Council and South Australian Road Transport Association
• Passenger Transport Division of the department
• state Returned Services League (RSL)
• local government, i.e. City of West Torrens and City of Unley
• local residents, businesses, and community groups.

By mid November 2006, a total of 184 feedback sheets with comments were submitted for the project team's consideration from the community’s review of the preliminary concept design.

Aspects of the preliminary concept that people were supportive of included:

• the overall concept design
• greening of South Road and inclusion of landscaping treatments into the design
• free flow traffic/improvement of traffic flow
• catering for 2026 traffic volumes
• Brown Hill Creek alignment maintained
• progressing the upgrade of South Road.

Some issues of concern, about the preliminary concept or project in general were also raised. Key issues included:

• local traffic access restrictions in some side streets
• traffic congestion in side streets during and after construction
• emergency services access during and after construction
• noise impacts on residents during and after construction
• traffic interaction with the tram crossing
• pedestrian access across South Road
• public transport changes ie bus stop locations and routes.

Enhancing safety for all users, maximising functionality of the intersection and improving sustainability was a focus of the design development group in developing the refined concept design, released in March 2007 for public comment. Here you can view a summary of the feedback recieved.

The final concept design is expected to be available in September 2007.

Grange Road to Port Road upgrade

Ongoing project planning work will continue to be undertaken over the next one to two years. The department anticipates, at this stage, that construction works will not start on this project for at least another three years.
