Community Interact

Community engagement

A comprehensive community engagement program was undertaken in August 2006 by the department. The program included a community open day on 6 August 2006, a display at the Adelaide Railway Station and at the Victoria Square tram terminus. The open day and displays were supported by a brochure, response form, postcard and advertising.

In total, 9 000 copies of the information brochure and response form were distributed to the general public and other interested parties, plus all property owners along the tramline extension corridor and to all the people who had previously written to the Minister for Transport about the project. The material was also available on the department's website as publicised by extensive advertising.

A total of 1 655 responses were received during this process - 234 during the open day, 1 007 by post and 414 on line. These respondents included a wide range of people from tram users to non tram users, directly affected parties, city motorists, public transport users and the general public.

The responses clearly indicated favourable support for the tramline extension to City West with 70 per cent of respondents supporting the proposal and, in many instances, advocating further staged extensions of the light rail network to other suburbs.
