Recruitment programs
The department has a number of entry level recruitment programs.
- Graduate Recruitment and Development Program
Recent university graduates are recruited from a range of disciplines including civil engineering and related areas, environmental sciences, accounting, business administration and arts to name a few.
- Qualified Technical Officer Scheme
This program recruits para-professionals who have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering. The scheme provides extensive on-the-job training in a range of areas such as planning, design and traffic engineering.
- Rural Operations Traineeship
This program is aimed at encouraging youth to seek employment in civil construction jobs particularly operating heavy machinery.
- Government Cadetship Scheme
The department provides opportunities for recruitment of untrained young people. Cadets complete on the job training while studying formal qualifications in areas such as human resources.
- Scholarships schemes
The department participates in various scholarships schemes aimed at encouraging young people into the industry. These include the Sylvia Birdseye Scholarship which seeks to increase the number of young women in civil engineering, the Aboriginal Scholarship Program offering scholarships in engineering, human resources and accounting, as well as two scholarships for civil engineers.
- Pre-recruitment programs
The department also offers vacation employment and work experience.
